How Many Ovens Do You Need?

Friday February 12, 2010

Most people have one oven in their kitchen. The most common alternative to this is to have a double oven, where you get two separate compartments to cook food in.

But have you ever considered the benefits of having two single ovens?

Of course if you are going to make this work you really need to have a decent sized kitchen. If you are pushed for space then a double oven is the best you are going to be able to manage. One other thing to bear in mind is that two single ovens look better integrated into tall units rather than being housed under the counter. This is mainly because it would look a bit odd to have a smaller hob positioned over the top of two ovens. You would at least need to buy a bigger one and position it exactly in the middle.

Two single ovens though do look good next to each other in two separate tall units – and they give you lots more cooking room too. Some people won’t feel the need to have two singles but if you do a lot of cooking you will notice how much easier it is to have two of them.

Let’s say you are cooking a roast dinner for the whole family for example. If you have a big joint in the oven you will need to lower the shelf to get it in. This will leave you with only a small amount of space underneath to put another dish.

That wouldn’t be a problem if you ended up taking the joint out before cooking the rest of the meal. But supposing you have plans for a big dessert that also needs a lot of oven space – and a lower temperature to cook it with?

This is the big difference because there is nothing to stop you having one oven set to cook at 220 degrees Celcius and the other one on a much lower setting – say perhaps 120 degrees Celcius. You can also take advantage of the ability to gently warm a lot of dinner plates rather than putting them in an oven which is red hot.

So as you can see there are lots of reasons why you might want two single ovens if you can fit them in. And once you get used to all the benefits they offer, you might end up using them even more as well.
